30 Sep Mike Farris rises up on ‘Shine For All The People’
No one gets near Mike Farris when it comes to laying down Southern, gospel-tinged soul. Proving to be one of the best voices in the area, Farris released his first full-length since 2007’s Salvation in Lights last week in the form of Shine For All The People.
Picking up where the other left off, Shine For All The People features 10 tracks that have a special hint of gospel backed by excellent brass and whirling keys.
The album opens with a bang with “River Jordan” and finds a peaceful tone in the Mary Gauthier penned track, “Mercy Now.” This has been one Farris has performed live for some time now, so it was especially fitting for it to make the cut for Shine For All The People.
Farris can take a traditional song such as “Sparrow” and give it a voice that is all its own while he also has the knack for cranking out jams like “Power of Love.”
“So many avenues of music flow through me, 100s of years of music, the music that I grew up with—from Blues, Rock, R&B and gospel—there had always been this pressure to try to force it into a box that would sell somehow. It’s crazy and overwhelming at times, the weight of trying to meet expectations and make a living, but this time, that all fell away. I know now, that this gift only exists to encourage people in their struggles and if there’s any power in it, it’s not from me,” Farris said in a recent news release.
Many understand Farris’ road to sobriety and it’s one that is evident in his uplifting delivery and subject matter. Through it all, his song is one that is common to all and one that walks the line of redemption, grace and limitations.
Mary Gauthier says “out of the arms of defeat Mike Farris has done a victory lap…he takes people who are hurting, who are broken, who think they are alone and through just the sound of his voice he lets them know that they’re not…that’s magic.”
